Edward VII was the second child and the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was born on 9th November 1841 at Buckingham Palace. Edward VII was named after his father, but his family and close friends called him Bertie. He also held the titles of Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Duke of Saxony.Edward VII sat on the throne on 22nd January 1901; the period of his rule is called the Edwardian era, which was the golden age for the upper classes in Europe. He is also known as the ‘Uncle of Europe', as he was closely associated with most European Royalty. Edward VII was the first English Monarch to visit Russia. Edward VII maintained a good foreign policy and paved the way for the Anglo-French Entente cordiale in 1904 during his rule.
During his rule, he issued various coinages depicting his portrait. The above silver rupee was issued when King Edward VII was the Emperor of India. The obverse side of this coin depicts a bust of Edward VII facing right and a non-continuous legend, ‘Edward VII King and Emperor’. The reverse side of this coin depicts the denomination One Rupee India, and the date 1906 below and floral pattern is around this.
