Penny Black Stamps Escorted in Bombproof Briefcase

2016-07-20 Wed

Nobody would have ever imagined that a stamp would be treated like a V.I.P. Yes, the 176-year-old Penny Balck stamps are so precious that they were transported in a special bombproof suitcase during the World Stamp Show-NY2016.

Only a very few stamps exist today and hence are stored at a low temperature, humidity controlled vault at London’s Postal Museum. The suitcase also had sensors and shock alarms to keep a check on the stamps throughout its journey to New York.

The event is held every 10 years and attracted 250,000 visitors from around the globe. The sheet will also be publically displayed permanently at The Postal Museum in spring 2017.

The Penny Black was the first ever adhesive postage stamp with e portrait of Queen Victoria and made postal services very reasonable.
