Dame of Elche on Banknote of Spain

The Bank of Espana issued 1 Spanish Peseta depicting the Dame of Elche in 1948 and withdrew from circulation in 2002.The Dame of Elche, also called Lady of Elx or Lady of Elche, is a bust of a lady discovered in 1897 at La Alcudia, an archaeological site on a private estate two kilometres south of Elche, Spain. The Sculpture is believed to date back to the 4th century BC, wearing an elaborate headdress. The bust shows the woman’s head, neck and shoulders and extends down to her chest. Now seen as one of Spain’s most famous icons, the bust is known as the Lady of Elche.
