Brazilian Flora, Fauna, Music and Architecture on Olympic Coins

Four coins have been released under a special set to celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympics. The first one celebrates the Bossa Nova musical style. Another silver coin honours the Arcos da Lapa, or Carioca Aqueduct in Rio de Janiero. The third silver coin celebrates a dolphin, and the final silver coin honours the bromeliad which is a species of hardy tropical flowering plants.

The musical style chorinho is known for the lamenting cry of its songs and is the highlight of the Music-themed coin in the second silver coin release. The Architecture silver coin from that launch honours the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niteroi, Rio, Brazil. The silver Fauna coin celebrates toucan and another one highlights helioconia plants.

The third series of silver coins celebrates the Sambadrome, a parade area in Rio de Janeiro where samba schools parade during the Rio Carnival.

Another silver coin celebrates forró, a musical and dance style which is popular in the country’s north-eastern region. Orchids are represented on the other silver coin and the Fauna coin highlights a Brazilian monkey, in the third release.

One of the final four coins released in 2016 celebrates Samba which originated in 1920s. Another silver coin depicts the Municipal Theater in Rio which is similar to Paris’ Opera house. A butterfly is depicted on in the latest Fauna silver coins, and the remaining Flora coin honours Pau Brazil, or Brazilwood, known for its orange-red wood that is used for making dyes and bows for stringed instruments.
