The Archaeological Survey of India is a government agency under the Ministry of Culture, established in 1861. It is responsible for archaeological research and the conservation and preservation of cultural-historical monuments of the country. This agency was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham. Alexander Cunningham was a British Army officer who took a keen interest in archaeology in India. He was the first Director-General of ASI in 1861.The Archaeology Survey of India is a Ministry of Culture organization for archaeological research and protection of cultural heritage. It regulates all archaeological activities; as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
