Royal Thai Mint Officials Interrogated for Theft
2016-07-15 Fri
50 polished-gold 16,000 baht commemorative coins celebrating the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 60th birthday were stolen last year on 21st May from the Coin Press Room of the Royal Thai Mint. 20 Royal Thai Mint officials were questioned about this.As per official reports, since these coins had some errors on them, they were almost going to be destroyed before they were stolen. Investigations reveal that they were probably stolen by the mint officials as there were no signs or marks on the vaults that stored the coins safely.
The total worth of all the missing coins put together is still unknown but they were being sold to the public for 30,000 baht each.
Due to technical reasons and since the theft was reported late, the police could not check security footage.
The investigation is still on.
