Rani Laxmibai, the queen of Jhansi, was born in the town of Varanasi into a Marathi Karhade Brahmin family. She was born Manikarnika Tambe, and her nickname was Manu.

Rani Lakshmi bai played a vital role in the Indian revolt of 1857. She is one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. As a woman, she changed the course of history through her courage, honor, and patriotism; today, she stands as an icon for women's empowerment.

Today, on 18th June 1858, died fighting British colonial rulers near Gwalior in a place known as Kotah-ki-Serai.
