Error Coin With 'Sandwich' Alteration
2016-07-14 Thu
The coin shown in this picture is not a doubled die nor is it a double-struck. The change is purposely made outside of a Mint production facility and is not struck at the coinage press. This kind of error coins are often referred as “sandwich” alteration. Two or more Lincoln cents were stacked on a hard surface to form a “sandwich.” The reverse of both the coins were placed facing each other. One of the coins were off-centre when the stack was hammered hard. The obverse of the coin was facing a flat hard featureless surface due to which the design details on this side are not very clear. Since the coins were stacked, the design elements transferred from one coin to the other. A mirror-image impression of a portion of the Lincoln Memorial, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and a portion of the word AMERICA in seen on the coin.
