Basketball Shaped Canadian Coin

2016-07-14 Thu

The RCM is going to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the invention of basketball by releasing a convex shaped coloured coin which looks like a basketball.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith for keeping athletes active during winters at the International Young Men’s Christian Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The reverse of the orange coloured coin has lines and dimples just like a real basketball. Two players are in action in the foreground. Other inscriptions on the coin read "CANADA" and "1891-2016".

The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "DG REGINA" and "25 DOLLARS."

Mintage of the coins is limited to 8,500 and each coin is priced at CAD $159.95.
