2022-06-09 Thu

The Bank of Lithuania issued the new coin on the 9th Sept which is the third coin in the series “Lithuanian Ethnographic Regions.” Coins dedicated to Samogitia and Aukštaitija were issued in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The new 2021 coin was issued to honor distinct regions of Dzukija.

Dzukija or Dainava is one of five ethnographic regions of Lithuania. Dzukija is known for its pine woods rich in mushrooms, and its sands, songs, and mineral water resorts. Traditionally, Alytus is regarded as the capital of the region.

The obverse side of the coin, designed by Rolandas Rim?nas, features a coat of arms of Dzukija: On a shield, an armored soldier, a halberd in his right hand, leans against a silver Baltic shield. Two lynxes support the coat of arms. Below on a ribbon is a Latin inscription translating to “hard-working people from a fierce tribe.” The soldier signifies a guardian of the land, while the lynxes symbolize vigilance and insight.

The reverse features a geographical map of Western Europe with 12 stars located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it and numeral two denoting the denomination.
