Canadian Coin Pays Tribute to Paramedics

2016-07-13 Wed

The second coin of the ‘National Heroes’ series was recently released by the Royal Canadian Mint, honouring the paramedics. The first coin in the series salutes the invaluable contributions of firefighters.

The term “para-medic” was used commonly in 1960’s during Vietnam War when a special team was sent out into the field for attending medical emergencies which were generally assigned to doctors. Many lives were saved by the paramedical team during this war. The tradition continued even after the Vietnam War and their skills were upgraded to specially serve such serious situations.

The Paramedics team plays a vital role for saving lives and attending crucial medical emergencies in the best possible way possible. The team has to be quick and very responsive to tackle all kinds of emergencies. They are also responsible for offering vital medical treatment on the spot for soldiers on the battlefield.

The coin depicts the paramedics team in action wearing dark uniforms with silver reflective bands just below the knees and an ambulance with its doors wide open at a hospital’s ambulance bay in the background. The obverse depicts the common Queen Elizabeth II portrait.

The Police coin will be released in August and the Military coin would be released in September.
