2016-07-13 Wed

The 9th design of the Australian Map Shaped Coin series was recently revealed. This one is called the 2016 Great White Shark 1 oz. 99.9% Silver Coin. The coin costs $99.09 AUD and its mintage is limited to 6,000 pieces.

The great white shark is a species of large lamniform shark found in the coastal surface waters of major oceans. The shark is 20 ft in length and 1,950 kg in weight. They can live for 70 years or more, making it one of the longest lived cartilaginous fish currently known. They can swim at the speed of 56 km/h (35 mph) for short bursts.

The reverse features a great white shark swimming in the ocean near a sunken ship; the background is in colour and the shark is in silver. Other inscriptions include ‘GREAT WHITE SHARK’, ‘1 OZ 999 SILVER’, ‘2016’, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.

The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with other inscriptions ‘ELIZABETH II’, ‘AUSTRALIA’, ‘2016’, and ‘1 DOLLAR’.

The coin comes in a special packaging and a certificate of authenticity.
