2022-05-18 Wed
Lucius Clodius Macer was a legatus of the Roman Empire in Africa during the first half-century of the Common Era. He is famous for his revolt against the Roman Emperor Nero in the spring of 68.Clodius Macer produced denarii which are not only extremely rare today but also among the most fascinating of the Roman Imperial series. Only about 85 are known to exist, of which only 20 bear his portrait.
The obverse of the offered coin features the head of Roma while the reverse features a trophy with Republican and imperatorial designs. ROMA – SC on the obverse highlights Senatorial traditions of the “res publica” or republic. The reverse features Macer’s name without any titles just like the coinage of Republican moneyers.
