Satyajit Ray was a Bengali motion-picture director, documentary maker, author, essayist, magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher, and music composer. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.

Satyajit Ray was born to Sukumar Ray and Suprabha Ray on May 02, 1921. His father, Sukumar Ray, died when Satyajit was barely 03 years old, so he was grown up by his mother. His grandfather was a writer and illustrator, and his father was a writer and illustrator of Bengali nonsense verse.

Satyajit Ray, after completing his graduation in 1940, his mother insisted that he study at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, founded by Rabindranath Tagore. After completing his course in 1943, he got a job in a British-owned advertising agency as an art director. Within a few years, he worked for a publishing house as a commercial illustrator, becoming a leading Indian typographer and book-jacket designer.

Satyajit Ray has directed 36 films, including feature films and documentaries. His first movie Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the Cannes Film Festival. He received many awards in his life including, 32 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, 2 Silver Bears, a number of additional awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.
