This tiny gold coin from medieval England is one of nine examples known. This gold thrymsa was issued circa A.D. 650 to 750. The thrymsa was a gold coin minted in seventh-century Anglo-Saxon England. It originated as a copy of Merovingian tremisses and earlier Roman coins with high gold content.Later thrymsas feature various different designs, including busts, crosses, lyre-like objects, and Roman legionary ensigns. Inscriptions are also common features and sometimes appear in Latin script and sometimes in Anglo-Saxon runes.
This coin was presented at Dix Noonan Webb’s auction and realized at 18,600 GBP against an estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 GBP.
