Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher and statesman. He is one of the most recognized and influential Indian thinkers in academic circles in the 20th century.Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served as the second president of India between 1962 and 1967. He also served India as first vice-president between 1952 and 1962.
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is best known for his comparative religion and comparative Eastern and Western philosophy. He served as a teacher both in India and at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He has also served as chairman of the UNESCO executive board (1948–49). Between 1949 and 1952, he served as Indian ambassador to the Soviet Union.
When Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was appointed as the president of India, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday on September 5. On that he replied.
"Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day."
Since then, every year September 5, is celebrated as Teachers' day throughout India.
