A Note for Vermont Bank
2022-02-16 Wed
A proof specimen banknote never issued from Burlington, Vermont, is among the best example of the vintage banknotes of America. The Burlington Savings bank opened for business on January 1, 1848, and operated under that title until 1988 when it merged with the Bank of Boston to become the Bank of Vermont. The 1830s-era USD 20 note was printed in New York by Durand, Perkins & Co. for the Bank of Burlington. It is printed in black ink on Indian paper and displays three vignettes reflective of the area — a woman seated holding a sword and scale, a lion to her left, and a steamboat in the background; sheaves of wheat; and a Native American paddling a canoe. This note only exists as proof.
