Iswar Chandra Vidhyasagar was an Indian educator, writer, philosopher, and social reformer of the 19th Century. He was born to an orthodox Brahmin family on September 26, 1820 CE.Iswar Chandra Vidhyasagar was one of the most prominent campaigners for the Hindu widow remarriage. Widow Remarriage was considered a shameless act during that time, he strongly opposed it and passes Hindu Widow's Remarriage Act in 1856.
Iswar Chandra Vidhyasagar was a brilliant student in Sanskrit College, Calcutta, where he received the title Vidhyasagar. In 1850, he was appointed as head pandit (scholar-teacher) of Fort William College, Calcutta. After a year he was appointed as a principal of Sanskrit language, where he promoted the study of English and admitted students of lower castes.
