Kittur Rani Channamma Commemorative Stamp

Kittur Rani Channamma was an Indian Queen of Kittur, a princely state in Karnataka. She was the first woman independence activist of Bharat; she bravely fought against British Empire and became a folk hero in Karnataka. Rani Channamma was well trained in archery, sword fighting, and horse riding.Rani Channamma got married at the age of 15, to Mallasarja Desai, the ruler of Kittur. In 1816, her husband died, leaving her with a young son; later, after a few years, her only son pass away in 1824. After her son’s death, Chennamma adopted a boy named Shivalingappa and named him the heir to the throne.
In the same year, the British government issued the Doctrine of Lapse policy; to attempt to maintain Indian control over the region. She bravely fought with the British government against the Doctrine of Lapse, in which she defeated the British government; but, she was dead in the imprisonment of a second rebellion by the British East India Company.
