Four of Five 2018 Quarter Dollars Designs Proposed by CFAC

2016-07-04 Mon

On 27th June, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee put forth the proposed designs for the five America the Beautiful quarter dollars that would be released in 2018. The meeting was held by a public forum with the American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar at Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo. All the designs were initially reviewed by the Commission of Fine Arts on 16th June.

The designs for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter dollar have been rejected and the U.S. Mint officials have been asked to come up with alternate designs for the same.

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore quarter dollar design depicts the Chapel Rock with a white pine on it. A different design has been sought for with a new rendition of the Chapel Rock.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter dollar design features two kayakers sailing to reach the rock formations at Devils Island. Two similar designs were presented for which questions were raised. Some considered both the designs as a single unit and some liked the sea arch designs individually. After a lot of discussion, a new set of designs has been sought for.

The Voyageurs National Park quarter dollar design features a common loon with a rock cliff in the background. Some liked the one with the small islands in the waters of the park.

The Cumberland Island National Seashore quarter dollar design depicts a loggerhead sea turtle swimming along the beach of Cumberland Island. The team considered this design to be the best among the lot and believed that this coin would be something that young numismatists would love to collect.

Though Cumberland Island National Seashore officials preferred the design with an adult and young child walking through the Island's Live Oak trees, the CFA chose the one with a snowy egret at a salt marsh, almost about to fly.

The Block Island National Wildlife Refuge quarter dollar design depicts a piping plover on the rocky beach with the North Light lighthouse in the background.

The CFA and the refuge officials both liked the design with black-crowned night-heron flying over a Cow Cove beach, looking towards Sandy Point with the North Light lighthouse is in the background.
