Jagannath Shankarseth Commemorative Stamp

Hon. Jagannath Shankerseth Murkute was an Indian philanthropist and educationalist. He was born in February 10, 1803; to a wealthy Murkute family of the Sunar or Daivadnya Brahmin community in Mumbai.Jagannath Shankarseth played an important role in many areas of life in Mumbai. Seeing for the betterment of education he was one of the founders of the School Society and the Native School of Bombay, the first of its kind in Western India. Later the school went through series of changes. In 1824, it became the Bombay Native Institution, in 1840, it was renamed as Board of Education, and in 1856 it was again renamed the Elphinstone Educational Institution. Balshahtri Jambhekar, Dadabhai Naroji, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar had been the student of this school. Later Gopal Krishna Gokhle and Lokmanya Tilak attended Elphinstone College for studies.
