Rani Velu Nachchiyar Commemorative Stamp

Rani Velu Nachchiyar was the queen of the Sivaganga estate from 1780 CE to 1790 CE. She was the first queen to fight against the British colonial power n India. For Tamilians, she is well known as 'Veeramangai', meaning 'Brave Women'. She was an active and talented young leader who fought against the cunning and brutes colonial forces.

Velu Nachchiyar was the only child of King Chellamuthu Vijayaragunatha Sethupathy and Queen Sakandimuthathal of Ramnad Kingdom.

Rani Velu Nachchiyar was well trained in war match weapons usage, martial arts like Valari, Silambam (fighting using the stick), horse riding, and archery. She was a scholar in many languages and she had proficiency with languages like French, English, and Urdu.
