Four Banknotes Cross the $100,000 Mark at Lyn Knight Auction

On 4th June, four fabled large-size notes crossed the $100,000 mark at the Lyn Knight Currency Auctions sale in Memphis, Tenn.The Friedberg 167a Series 1863 $100 Spread Eagle legal tender note was sold for $270,250. It was graded About New 55 Premium Paper Quality and was the first note to feature an American Eagle. It is the top five samples out of the 22 known ones. A 1878 $20 silver certificates by J.C. Hopper (F-305) was sold for $141,000. The note is graded Very Fine 30 Apparent, and they have either engraved or autographed countersignatures of an assistant treasurer along with the treasurer and register of the Treasury. The Black Back Series 1880 $100 silver certificate (F-341) graded VF-35 Apparent was also sold for the same amount. Out of the 24 known examples, only five are in institutional collections.
A rare F-328 $50 note was sold for $105,750. Many other such rare notes were sold at the event.
