2021-09-07 Tue

The Battle of Lepanto was a battle between the Catholic Holy League fleet led by Don Juan of Austria and the Ottoman fleet under Muezzinzade Ali Pasha. This battle took place on 7 October 1571; at the mouth of the Gulf of Patras, near where the Peloponnesian peninsula joins the mainland. The Battle of Lepanto is considered one of the largest battles since ancient times and the last great naval conflict dominated by armed rowing vessels.

The victory of the holy league had great importance in the history of Europe. It had great symbolic importance; in a period when Europe tore by its wars of religion following the Protestant Reformation.

This commemorative stamp; was issued by Malta to commemorate the 4th centenary year of the Battle of Lepanto in 1971.
