Japan's 1964 Tokyo Olympics Coin

Japan had been the host of Olympics game for more than one time. Last Olympic Games that Japan hosted were in 1964. The 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo celebrated Japan's progress and reemergence on the world stage. The new Japan was no longer a wartime enemy, but a peaceful country. Moreover, the 1964 Summer Games were the first Olympics held in Asia.

To celebrate the event Japan issued a special 100 Yen silver commemorative coin. 16 million ounces of silver was used to strike the 80,000,000 coins produced to commemorate the summer 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. None of these coins were recorded as ever going into circulation as they were grabbed and stored away as collector’s items.

The coins were issued during the reign of Emperor Hirohito. The coins features Olympic circles on base of flaming torch on the obverse flanked by authority above and value below, The reverse depicts the denomination value ‘100’ within center circle.
