German Notgeld with Donky
2021-09-02 Thu
Notgeld aka emergency money or necessity money refers to money issued by an institution in a time of economic or political crisis. This occurs usually when sufficient state-produced money is not available from the central bank. Most notably, notgeld generally refers to money produced in Germany and Austria during World War I and the Interbellum. Two Mark Notgeld is evaluated as the funniest money note on this planet. This money was printed by Germany and Australia during the economic and political crisis after World War I. There are some weird ones, but perhaps the weirdest one is this Two Mark banknote.
The weird part is that the obverse of the banknote depicts Grazing donkey defecating coins from the fairy tale The Golden-Ass with a poem beneath. The banknote perhaps is symbolic to the inflation prevailed country and devaluation of money.
