Hyder Ali Silver Rupee Sold For INR 3,60,000

This silver rupee was issued by Mysore king Hyder Ali, in the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. The weight of this coin is around 11.36g and minted in Arkat.Hyder Ali was the ruler of the Mysore kingdom in South India. He played an important role in the wars of South India in the mid-18th century. He started his career as a soldier in the army of the Wodeyar dynasty. Later, due to his professional skills, he was raised to the designation of ‘Commander in Chief’ in the army of Krishnaraja Wodeyar II. In the year 1761, Hyder Ali got appointed to the position of Chief Minister.
The above silver; was issued by him during his rule in the Mysore kingdom. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Saya Fazl Shah Alam Badshah Gazi’and AH date 1196. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Zarb (Arkar), Sanah 17, Julus Mainamat Manus’. This silver rupee was sold for INR 3,60,000 in an auction of Oswal Antiques held on 1st August 2021.
