2021-07-22 Thu

The Royal Mint has launched a new 50p to commemorate Team GB competing in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. The coins were first released as part of a commemorative set at the beginning of last year.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were originally due to commence on 22nd July 2020, but because of the COVID-19, it will now start on 23rd July 2021. There are two different versions of this coin; one dated 2020 on the obverse, the other 2021. The 2020-dated Team GB 50p coins were originally issued as part of the 2020 annual UK coin sets.

The obverse shows the right-facing Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse of the coin was designed by David Knapton. It shows different sports equipment, with the inscription “TEAM GB” and the date 2021.
