Lead Coin of Kumaras of Karhad Listed For INR 15,000

This lead coin that weighs around 9.72g is listed for INR 15,000 in the upcoming online auction of Oswal Antiques that will be held on 1st August 2021. This coin was struck at Junnar, a city in the Pune district of the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Karad is one of the most important cities and centres of the district Satara in the Indian states of Maharashtra. During the 1st Century, it was one of the most important trading and religious centre of India. We can find the mention of Karad in the Indian epic like Mahabharata. In Sabhaparvan; the second book of Mahabharata, Karad is mention as part of Karnataka.

The obverse of this coin depicts a standing lion facing towards the left, in front of a plough standard in railing, strung bow and arrow above its back, traces of Brahmi legend “…isamulanandasa” to right. The reverse of this coin depicts a Composite symbol of three arched hills with a crescent and a tree in the railing on a platform, and a wavy line below.
