Today Vasco Da Gama departs for his first Voyages

Today in 1497, Vasco Da Gama departed for his first voyage and became the first European to reach India by sea. He was the first person to link Asia and Europe by ocean route, connecting the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. He opens up the sea route from Europe to the East.

Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese Navigator, commissioned by the Portuguese king to find a maritime route to the East. He was appointed to command an expedition equipped by the Portuguese government. His Voyages to India; proven to be one of the instrumental movements in the history of navigation. He subsequently made two other voyages to India and was appointed as Portuguese viceroy in India in 1524.
