The Battle of Somme is also known as the battle of the offensive, the battle was one of the largest battles of World War I fought between 1st July and 18 November 1916. This battle was fought between British Empire and the French Third Republic against the German Empire. It was the costly and largely unsuccessful Allied offensive on the Western Front during World War I. It was not only one of the largest battles but also amongst the bloodiest in all of human history.

The Battle of Somme; was fought because the French were got many losses at Verdun to the east Paris, so the High Allied Commander of French decided to divert the attention of German by attacking them further north at the Somme. The High Allied Commander had issued two clear objectives:-

To relieve the pressure of the French Army by launching a combined British and French offensive.
To inflict as heavy losses as possible on the German armies.
The Battle of Somme was the true horrors of warfare and demonstrated the futility of trench warfare.
