To bring luck to the Canadian Ice hockey teams during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, a Loonie coin was embedded at centre ice. The coins turned to be really lucky as both the men’s and women’s teams won gold medals.Going with the tradition, a Lucky Loonie has been released during every Olympic and Paralympic Games. This year, the coins are intended to lift the spirits of the Canadian athletes who are heading to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brazil.
The reverse of the $5 circulation-quality coin features a loon on the water about to take-off. A maple leaf is depicted in the background. Other depictions include Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Team logos with inscriptions ‘CANADA’, ‘2016’, and ‘LUCKY LOONIE / DOLLAR PORTE-BONHEUR’. Obverses feature the common portrait of the Queen Elizabeth.
The coins are also available in special 5 coin packs and rolls as well.
