2021-06-24 Thu

The dalasi is the currency of the Gambia that was adopted in 1971. It is subdivided into 100 bututs. It replaced the Gambian pound. The name derives from dala, a nickname of the 5 French West African francs notes which in turn derived from "dollar", while butut is from Wolof butuut, "small thing".

Banknotes of Gambia currently in circulation are 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, and 200 dalasis. This is a 100 Dalasi banknote made from a hybrid paper and depicts Pictures of fishermen fishing (the main occupation in the Gambia) on the reverse.

The Obverse depicts a portrait of Black Crowned Crane in and the Gambian coat of arms that depicts two lions holding an ax and a hoe (symbol of agriculture) and supporting a shield. A helmet rests on the shield and an oil palm above it.
