2016-06-21 Tue
The first edition of the “Coin Design Handbook” was issued by the European Vending Association in 2008 at the 25th Mint Directors Conference. The book was released with the intention to create awareness about the security features and measures that need to be considered for automated vending transactions and for industries which require coin counting, sorting and handling facilities. Another objective was to curb criminal counterfeiting activities. The second edition of the book was released in 2012 and the updated 3rd edition was introduced in May this year at the 29th Mint Directors Conference that was conducted in Bangkok, Thailand. The handbook was written to understand the coin validation process and to help mints in designing and manufacturing coins that can be electronically validated using electromagnetic signatures. Coin manufacturing experts and market leaders of this domain have come together to write and edit this book.
Since the book contains confidential data, it is strictly circulated among mints, central banks, treasury departments, manufacturers of coin blanks, and institutions like police forces, Europol and Interpol who deal with cases related to counterfeiting.
