Emperor Conrad II of the Holy Roman
2021-06-04 Fri
Conrad II was Holy Roman emperor from 1027 until his death in 1039 and founder of the Salian dynasty. During his reign, he proved that the German monarchy had become a viable institution. Since the survival of the monarchy was no longer primarily dependent on a compact between sovereign and territorial nobles, it was henceforth invulnerable to prolonged rebellion on their part. His reign marked a high point of medieval imperial rule during a relatively peaceful period for the empire. Upon the death of the childless King Rudolph III of Burgundy in 1032, Conrad claimed dominion over the Kingdom of Burgundy, conquered it, and incorporated it into the empire. The three kingdoms (Germany, Italy, and Burgundy) formed the basis of the empire as the "royal triad" (regna tria).
This penny was struck during the reign of Emperor Conrad II (1024-1039), in the imperial mint at Regensburg. Its obverse depicts the emperor's portrait, the reverse bears his name and across.
