Britannia Gets a New Look

2021-06-03 Thu

The Royal Mint has unveiled the new 2021. This allows the Mint to offer designs reflecting the nation’s diversity. Each year the Royal Mint produces a new Britannia collection that is inspired by different aspects of the nation.

Britannia was the Latin name given to the UK by the Romans after their invasion in 43 CE. The weapon-clad warrior woman became a personification of the British Isles and has fronted the country's currency since 1672.

This year the collection celebrates Britain’s spirit of innovation, and for the first time will feature two designs designed by artist P.J. Lynch. Royal Mint makes history with a new coin featuring Britannia as a woman of color.

The reverse shows a right-facing portrait of Britannia. She is shown wearing a helmet, engraved with a lion. The waves from the sea are visible in the background. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark.
