2021-05-03 Mon

Margaret Thatcher was the “Iron Lady” of British politics; she was the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom, served from 1979 until 1990. She was the most controversial figurehead of conservative ideology during her time in office. She was the longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold that office.

During her time she opposed Soviet communism and also fought for the war to maintain control of the Falkland Islands. Both her political philosophy and economical policies emphasized liberalization, particularly to the financial sector. She also privatized state-owned companies and reducing the power and influence of trade unions.

This commemorative stamp was issued by Ascension Island to commemorate her and her work in the year 2013.
