Capriana Monastery on Moldova Banknote

2021-04-30 Fri

Moldova is a landlocked country. Its largest part lies in Bessarabia. Its western border touches the Prut River. It is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Chisinau is the capital city. It has a continental climate. It is split between the East European Plain and the Pontic–Caspian steppe of the Circumboreal Region within the Boreal Kingdom.

Adjoined here is the Leu banknote of Moldova that features one of the oldest monasteries called Capriana. The term ‘Leu’ means "lion", and is derived from the Romanian word. The Moldovan leu is subdivided into 100 bani.

The obverse has a portrait of Prince Stephen III. The banknote has inscriptions from the popular Romanian pastoral ballad, “Pe-un picior de plai, Pe-o gura de rai” which means “Near a low foothill, at Heaven’s doorsill”.
