Robert Edward Lee was an American Army Officer Confederate general, College President, and a central figure in contending memory traditions of the American Civil War. He led the army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until its surrender in 1865 and earned a reputation as a skilled tactician. He served the United States of America during the Mexican-American war and also as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy.Robert E. Lee started his military career after completing his graduation, as he joined the army in a position of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After joining the army he quickly rose in rank and graduated second in the class of 1829. In August 1865, after the end of the war, he was invited to serve as a president of Washington College where he and his family are buried.
