Copper Coin of Kakatiyas of Warangal

The Kakatiya dynasty was the South-Indian dynasty that ruled in the eastern Deccan region comprising present-day Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. They also ruled the part of eastern Karnataka and southern Odisha between the 12th and 14th centuries.The Kakatiyas dynasty is well known for the construction of a network of tanks for irrigation and drinking water and thereby gave a big boost to the overall development of the region. They are also considering as the first feudatories of the Western Chalukyas of Kalyana, ruling over a small territory near Warangal. The powerful leaders like Ganapathi Deva and Rudramadevi are observed in this dynasty.
This copper coin that weighs around 9.31g was issued from Kakatiya of Warangal, by king Prataparudra II. The obverse of this coin depicts Devanagri legend “Shri Madhuka/ ra Kakatiya / Pratapa(Rudra)”. The reverse of this coin depicts the Devanagari legend “Deva Vi / Jaya Kataka / 2 Anka”.
