2021-04-06 Tue
Also known as the Hari Nelayan Nasional, the National Fisherman Day is celebrated in Indonesia on 6th April every year which commemorates the profession of fishery and fishermen of the country. The Republic of Indonesia is the world’s largest island country. No wonder that fishery plays an important role in the country’s economy. Indonesia’s fishery production reached approximately 8.9 million tones. That same year, almost 6.5 million people were engaged in fishing and fish farming in Indonesia. About 95% of the country’s fishery production comes from artisanal fishermen whose working conditions leave much to be desired.
Hence, National Fisherman Day was established to emphasize the important contribution of Indonesian fishers to the country’s economy, as well as to raise public awareness of the challenges they face on a daily basis.
In the year 1969, Indonesia post issued a commemorative stamp honoring fishery profession. This 40- Indonesian rupiah banknote depicts a scene of fishery (Tunas in net). The stamp features a beautiful contrast combination of green background and yellow tunas.
