New Rare Varieties of Recent American Coins Spotted

2016-06-16 Thu

Sometimes, coins are re-struck giving them a new set of features. Though these variations could be minor, they are mostly rare to find and something that collectors might want to seek.

A 1948-D/D Lincoln cent depicting a distinctly repunched Mint mark classified as a D/D East was submitted by William Slaughter as one of the new varieties. The coin features a partial extra Lincoln Memorial column. The design was introduced in 2010 and has been collected by many because of their die varieties.

A 2013 Lincoln cent with a doubled die obverse and extra thick letters of LIBERTY and the date was submitted by Aaron Laramee. The ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ inscription is slightly thicker whereas nothing is visible on the upper left of the ERTY in LIBERTY.

Alfonso Lopez spotted the fringe on the frontiersman’s coat of the 2016-P Cumberland Gap National Historical Park quarter dollar which was doubled to the left of the upper right arm. Though the coin features a minor doubled die, it is something for collectors to take note of.
