Gustav III was the king of Sweden; he sat on the throne of Sweden in 1771 CE and ruled it until his assassination in 1792 CE. He was the eldest son of Adolf Frederick, king of Sweden, and Queen Louise Ulrika.Gustav III was an intelligent and cultured advocated of the Enlightenment. During his reign, he proposed the policy known as ‘enlightened absolutism’, in this he espoused the ideals of the Enlightenment while increasing his power and autocracy. He became the patron of Swedish art, curtailed the power and corruption of the nobility, and introduced reforms to liberalize the economy. He also amassed enormous personal power and cracked down on press freedoms.
