Today Victor Emmanuel II becomes the first King of Italy in 1861

Victor Emmanuel II was the king of Sardinia from 1849 until 1861 when he assumed the title of King of Italy and became the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century, a title he held until his death in 1878. After sitting on the throne of Italy he worked to free Italy from foreign control and became a central figure of the movement for Italian unification.In the year 1848, when the war broke out in Austria, Victoria Emmanuel fought courageously at the head of the division. He fought his first Italian War of Independence in 1848-1849, before being the king of Piedmont-Sardinia following his father's abdication.
This commemorative stamp was issued by Italy to commemorate Victor Emmanuel II in the year 1978.
