The House of Representatives broke the tie of Electoral College and elected Thomas Jefferson president of the United States. Jefferson’s triumph brought an end to one of the most acrimonious presidential campaigns in U.S. history and resolved a serious Constitutional crisis.Thomas Jefferson was elected as the third president of the United States. The election constitutes the first peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another in the United States. Jefferson had also served in two Continental Congresses, as minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington, and as John Adams’ vice president.
