New $20 Currency Note to Depict Harriet Tubman

2016-06-14 Tue

The United States treasuring secretary Jacob J Lew announced that a portrait of Harriet Tubman would be featured on the latest $20 bill. This popular civil rights activist and freedom fighter would be the 3rd prominent woman to be ever depicted on American paper money and the first woman to be depicted since more than 100 years. The note will have new security features. Apart from this, new $10 and $5 notes will also be released. Some people were unhappy about the removal of Alexander Hamilton or Andrew Jackson from their respective bills which is why they would not be taken off completely.

In the 1880s and 90s, Martha Washington featured on a $1 "Silver Certificate” and in the 1860s the reverse of the $20 bill featured Pocahontas. These notes are extremely rare and precious today.

The new notes will be released in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States of America.

Officials have stated that though choosing the right personality to be featured on a national currency was tedious, it was a very crucial process indeed.
