Mahishmati was one of the most important kingdoms of the Kalachuri dynasties between the 6th and 7th Centuries. Mahishmati was the capital of the Kalachuri dynasty during the ancient period in India. We can get the reference of Mahishmati in the Indian epic like Mahabharata, Ramayana (Hindu), and Digha Nikaya (Buddhist). During the ancient period; it was one of the most important cities in the southern part of the Avanti Kingdom and later in the Anupa Kingdom. The famous ancient Indian poet Kalidasa; had mentioned Mahishmati as a city in the southern part of the Avanti Kingdom and later in the Anupa Kingdom in his poem ‘Raghuvamsa’.With the reference of epigraphy and coins of three important rulers, of Mahishmati, namely Krishnaraja, Shankaragana, and Buddharaja, are known to be found over a wide area. The rise of the Badami Chalukyas in the 7th CE led to the decline of Kalachuris of Mahishmati. However, they continued to exist in the Malwa region, and later in the 12th century CE another Kalachuri dynasty arose in the Deccan with its power seat in Karnataka carving, a kingdom out of the Kalyani Chalukyas.
