2021-01-29 Fri
Charlemagne; aka Charles-the Great is regarded as the Father of Europe as he united most of Western Europe. He was the King of the Franks, the King of the Lombards, and the Emperor of the Romans. During the Early Middle Ages, he united the majority of western and central Europe. He was the first recognized emperor to rule from Western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire around three centuries earlier. Charlemagne’s coinage consisted wholly of deniers.12 deniers were equal to one silver solidus. A uniform design type of the denier depicts a cross surrounded by the royal title on the obverse, and the Karolus (Charlemagne’s Latin name) monogram and mint name on the reverse.
In 2000, French mint issued a special commemorative coin issued to commemorate 2000th anniversary of French Coinage. The obverse of the coin depicts the denomination and date within a wreath with the name of the country around. The reverse of the coin depicts a Charlemagne Denar coin design.
