Burns Night, also known as Robert Burns Day, is celebrated in Scotland and by Scots people around the world on January 25. The celebration commemorates the birthday of Robert Burns, a renowned Scottish poet and lyricist who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.Robert Burns was born on 25th January 1759. Burns is widely recognized as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement and the best-known poet among those who have written in the Scots language, although he wrote in Standard English and Scots dialect of English as well. Burns’s poem and the song “Auld Lang Syne” is a very popular New Year’s song in the English-speaking world.
Scotland issued a five-pound banknote to commemorate the contribution of the Poet to the national literature. The banknote depicts Robert Burns facing left on the obverse and the scene of Harvest Mouse and rose from Burns' poems on the reverse.
