Charles Augustus Lindbergh was an American aviator, author, inventor, and activist. He was one of the best-known figures in aeronautical history; well known as the first aviator to complete a solo transatlantic flight, which he did in his plane, Spirit of St. Louis. In 1920, he was offered $20,000 by Raymond Orteig, a hotel owner, for being the first pilot to make the journey from New York to Paris without making any stops. Lindbergh received many prestigious honours, including the Distinguished Flying Cross medal from President Calvin Coolidge.Charles Lindbergh was an officer in the United States Army Corps Reserve; he also received the highest military decoration and; also a Medal of Honour; for his transatlantic flight. He made several achievements, both in commercial aviation and air mail, which revolutionized the aviation industry, and he devoted much time and effort to promoting such activity.
